I keep getting this error:

"Please enter no more than 31 Characters"

Why do I get this? (I got this in the events editor)

Check your directives text... they cannot exceed more than 31 letters.

*wonders why he would have a directive that long in the first place*

It's easy to go over. If you just have a destroy ship directive, sure, you can do it in under 31 chars, but if you want a specific subsystem that isn't the engines (disable ship) and a long ship name - "Destroy Navigation Subsystem of Peloponnesian" is 45 charachters - sure it can be cut down, but when you're still learning it's easy to go over. Even more complex is when you need to add 5 or 6 charachters to the end for a keypress.

I occassionally have some problems with this too. Although I have not really had to exceed the 31-character limit, there were times when the directive was taking up almost three lines and needed to be shortened, but it can usually be shortened a bit by rearranging or truncating the words. BW's example can be rewritten as "Destroy Peloponnesian nav", and one of my missions uses "Destroy Amenhemet backup reactor."
