You guys hear about it? Some hypernova, or something, which "in the first minute after the explosion, emitted energy at a rate more than a million times the combined output of all the stars in the Milky Way". Two billion light years away, thankfully (and two billion years old, then, I assume).

IIRC I think they explained this as being caused by a star falling into one of the black holes at the centre of a galaxy.
