PRESIDENT IVANOV MEETS WITH HIS FELLOW COUNTRYMEN BEFORE THE BETA AQUILAE CONGRESS - Venus Discord, Deneb

Today the president of the GTVA General Assembly, Vladimir Ivanov, met with his fellow Slovenians on Deneb 5, to hold a special banquet with his countrymen, and discuss politics with the members of the General Assembly on the planet.
In the banquet held in the City of New Pira, where the president met with the local authorities, and the cultural leaders of the Slovenian State. According to the Deneb Press Centre, the president underlined the importance of nationalism, and patriotism in the Alliance. "Let´s be Terrans, but remain Slovenians," he said. President Ivanov has always been known for his patriotic speeches, and meetings with his kinsmen, so this banquet should not come as a surprise to any, who have come to know and love president Ivanov.

President Ivanov will arrive at the Beta Aquilae Conference one day before it´s start on April, 10th. This is the first open meeting of the General Assembly in 15 years, where every member of the Assembly is expected. In addition to the 900 senators, seats have been reserved for over 2000 journalists, among them our own Dan McCoyle, and 10 000 seats for the public. The Conference will be broadcasted over all major GTVA channels, among them the Galactic Herald 2.

PIRATES DESTROY THE FREIGHTERS CARRYING SIDEARMS FOR THE BETA AQUILAE SECURITY - Dan McCoyle, Beta Aquilae

Yesterday night, Galactic Standard Time, a pirate group destroyed a convoy of Poseidon class freighters, carrying sidearms for the Security Forces of the Beta Aquilae Conference. Goverment denies possible sabotage
The accident took place near the Sirius-Alpha Centauri jump node. According to eyewitnesses the escorts were destroyed by mines hidden in the nearby asteroid field, and the freighters themselves by a wing of Ulysses class fighters. How the pirates got their hands on such advanced technology is currently unknown, but an investigation has been started.

"It is likely that the attack was funded by a terrorist organisation in these systems, possibly the Sirius Group or the Neo-Terra. It is highly unlikely, that pirates could conduct an assault on such public place without outside support," said Michael O´Reilly, head of Security at the Sydney Station.

Despite the possible involvement of terrorist organisations, the goverment has overruled the possibility of a sabotage of the Beta Aquilae Congress. "The route of the transports was unknown, they were unmarked, if it weren´t for this accident, the public wouldn´t even know about them." said Cyrus Sinclair, chief of Security atthe Beta Aquilae Congress.

The freighters contained over 900 Subach Sidearms for the security forces at the Beta Aquilae Congress. The destruction of the sidearms will not delay the Congress, according to Sinclair, as a request for replacements has already been sent to Subach-Innes. How such a number of firearms will be  delivered to Beta Aquilae in time is, quote "classified at the hightest level".

Tune in on Galactic Herald 1 today at 18:00 GST, for exclusive footage of the attack on the freighters.

I was under the distinct impression that Deneb was a squarely Vasudan system.

BTW, I didn't think the GTVA would have an overall leader, as it is organised like the UN. If there were a leader he would only be like the speaker in the House of Commons, a figurehead whose only purpose is to prevent fisticuffs.

now, now, now, don't get me wrong here, IMO, the GTVA is by no means a presidential alliance. The president is.... well, the english Queen would be an understatement. Basically, he's the speaker of the General Assembly. He opens and closes the congresses (most of them are held over distances though, occasions when all 900 members are in the same place, like the Beta Aquilae Congress are very rare, as most of the GA members are governors and other important people), and has a great moral power (the public usually supports the president), but almost no power politically

Ahh, that sounds reasonable.

He is a lot like the speaker in the 'Commons, then, except for the moral power and respect bit.

PRESIDENT IVANOV ARRIVES AT BETA AQUILAE - Dan McCoyle, Beta Aquilae

The president finally arrives at Beta Aquilae, as one of the last members of the General Assembly. Ivanov´s Public Advisor Andrew Webber sais that the President was held by "last minute issues."
All the hotels in New Paris are full, as most of the guests have already arrived. The rest are going to find it difficult to find accomodation. At the moment, an amazing number of 845 representatives of the General Assembly are already on Beta Aquilae Prime, and 40 more are expected. The location of the president has been classified at the highest level, to avoid possible terrorist attacks, as well as harassment by the media.

It is estimated that the New Paris State will gain a profit of more than 500 Million Dollars in the coming weeks from tourists, journalists and the goverment. 200 new guards have been called to the New Paris Concert Hall, where the conference will be held. Even members of the National Guard are present. The conference will start tomorrow at 9:00, GST. The conference will be broadcasted live by all of the major Terran and Vasudan channels, among them our own Galactic Herald 1.

SUDDEN ILLNESS PARALYZES HEAD OF SECURITY - Albert Donaghue, Beta Aquilae

Today at 8:45, Beta Aquilae Time, Cyrus Sinclair was found unconscious in his apartement in the Olympia hotel in New Paris. The illness has been identified as the Phosphorous Fever, known to spread in the volatile worlds in Alpha Centauri and Capella.
Sinclair was quickly transported to the 3rd Millennium Hospital, where the doctors fought for his life for 4 hours. Currently his situation has been deemed stable, but the Head of Security will remain, paralyzed for at least 5 months.

This incident has not changed the goverments mind, and the conference will be held on time. Commander Ashley of the National Guard has been assigned as the new head of security. "We are all shocked by this incident, but the biggest political event of the decade will not wait," said Ashley to the Galactic Herald. President Ivanov refused to comment on the situation.
