I am wondering if this is possible and if it is how it is done. I have already gotten it so my brother and I can play games via the IPX protocol, but internet sharing eludes me still.

The two PC's involved
 -PC1 = My mom's computer. Win98 (this is an upgrade to Win95 but is not SE). This computer is also the host because it has the internet connection.

 -PC2 = My computer. WinXP Home. This computer as you may have guessed is the client.

The networking I'm using is like the title says, an Ethernet crossover cable.


So if anyone knows of a great tutorial on how to share internet please tell me 'cuz I've looked and looked but I can't find one that I can follow.

Yes it is possible. I just did it yesterday. Use windows XP help on networking. You will have to create some setup discs and stuff...uhm just follow instructions. It took me about 5 mins to make a network. BTW if you have any firewalls (norton etc...) shut em down. And turn em on when you go to internet. I would also recommend that you choose an option: THIS COMPUTER BELONGS TO A NETWORK WITHOUT INTERNET CONNECTION. just to be safe. Have fun.

Windows has an internet sharing ability which is what we use in my house, it works well enough. Not sure if it's in 98 though, IIRC we had a helluva game getting 98 to work, had to mess about with proxy software, DNS settings and all sorts of ****.

If it's possible, upgrade the machine with 98 upto ME or XP pro. You also need to install the TCP/IP protocol in your network settings.

Had to do this today myself but I'm hungover something chronic so this is the best reply you'll get from me. Sure somebody could be a bit less vague .

yes good idea. I use ME on my old machine. And you don't need TCP/IP setting up. Just follow the instructions on setting up a home network from Win XP help.

Don't know about ME but my mom's comp is from 1998 and it barely runs win98. *note to self. Talk dad into getting new family computer*

I'll try proxy again after I re-setup the network. I didn't use the " THIS COMPUTER BELONGS TO A NETWORK WITHOUT INTERNET CONNECTION" setting when doing it for the first time.

About TCP/IP protocols I do have it setup for the dialup and the network cards. But I'm baffaled by trying to setup an IP address for the host for network and one for the ISP. If that is even possible.

I found this site invaluable when I was trying to figure out how to share a Broadband conection. They say they can show you how to share dial-up too.
