Is there a way to write an exe that can compress a wav file to about 1/10th the size of the wav file and when you install the exe, it decompresses the wav file to normal? I was wondering how some of these campaignes that aren't silent do this?

My guess would be an MP3 encoder/decoder or something like UHARC.

Hmmm... would that work with an exe file though? The problem is that I have a 20MB song in my campaigne and I plan voice acting for almost every mission for every mission for about 13 missions in total. That could make an enormouse download if they are all wav files and they aren't at least compressed. I know that there are some campaignes out there that have voice acting and music. So how is it done with such a short download?

Kill the bit-rate to like 96, gives it a nice radio crackle. That should shave some mb's. And make extensive use of the built in wavs.

Ugh, that's going to be tricky, there are actually a cast of main characters in my campaigne. Meaning you have a main character that talks and interacts with other characters. There are also some very very very long breifings. Most of the messages and conversations during the game are very much needed to tell the story. The problem is that you are flying while the storyline is going on so u don't really have a lot of time to read the messages. I have heard that u can compress sounds with VP files. However, can you use these for scripted messages? I know that other people have put music and such in FS1 missions. I just need to figure out how they did it.

You can use Sound Recorder (comes with Windows) to convert standard WAV files to the Microsoft ADPCM format (the 22KHz frequency seems to work well), which significantly reduces the filesize. FS2 can read this format and it is done for many of the default sound and music files.

Sweet! It worked!!! Now, if I make a game installer and use winzip, that should compress it even more. I plan possibly a 30MB download for the whole game. I just compressed a 5 minute 47 second song into a file that is around 3.5MB.

Just for the record, the in-game messages in the official   missions are PCM 8-bit 11Khz mono.
