You forget one key thing when you talk about what gets cut/reduced... all of that stuff is saved, and will undoubtably make an appearance in the extended edition that will certainly be released. I thought the extended edition to FotR was a tremendous improvement, and you know that Jackson and the NewLine folks will want to milk the films for all that they are worth. I look forward to seeing what they come up with, but the scouring of the shire really is too important to be let go. And the whole thing with Sam and Rosey has already been brought up, so that should have to come to some conclusion too. As much emphasis is being placed on the hobbits anyway, the films will need that conclusion. And remember, it has already been shown in part (Frodo sees it with Giladrial... I can't spell Tolkenian), so some of the footage doesn't even need to be reworked. I agree though that the books and the movies are not and never will be equal.
