Now, rumour has it that the Scouring of the Shire has been cut. But if that's so, what are they going to do about Saruman?

Yeah, I've heard that one too. I wouldn't have too much trouble if they cut down the Scourging of the Shire, so it won't be like 30 mins.

Because the movie most likely will end with the celebrations at Minas Tirith, with perhaps an epilogue of sorts where Sam expalains what happened afterwards and then we fade to him all old and crinkly sitting by the fire as his grandchildren are listening to him, telling the story.

:doubt: hmm...
Ok, thats too much of an hollywood end.

But I won't be too pissed off if they decide to leave the scourging out, but instead only mention it. If they totally leave it out without mention, then they gotta find a way to get rid of Saruman in a hopefully as sattisfying way.
I have returned... Again...

You forget one key thing when you talk about what gets cut/reduced... all of that stuff is saved, and will undoubtably make an appearance in the extended edition that will certainly be released.  I thought the extended edition to FotR was a tremendous improvement, and you know that Jackson and the NewLine folks will want to milk the films for all that they are worth.  I look forward to seeing what they come up with, but the scouring of the shire really is too important to be let go.  And the whole thing with Sam and Rosey has already been brought up, so that should have to come to some conclusion too.  As much emphasis is being placed on the hobbits anyway, the films will need that conclusion.  And remember, it has already been shown in part (Frodo sees it with Giladrial... I can't spell Tolkenian), so some of the footage doesn't even need to be reworked.  I agree though that the books and the movies are not and never will be equal.
who needs a signature? ;)
It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

Evidently not, since 'Gil' is a stem only found in male elf names (specifically Noldorin elves) such as Gildor, Gil-galad and Gilfanon [/Tolkien Anorak]

Yeah, I forgot about the extended editions, no doubt they'll add some more of it in there, but I think the scourging will anyway be way shorter in the film than it is in the book. I'm placing my money on the epilogue speech of some sort.
