I need to know if it's possible FS2 caused a fuse to blow in my monitor on it's video card detection sequence when you first install it.

I just got this new 3.2ghz alienware and the NEC monitor only supports as low as 640x480.  Does the FS2 detection program (using an old directx I would imagine) fubar my monitor by using some ungodly 320x240 mode?  The monitor died about halfway through the detection sequence which is why I am worried.  I turn it on it just flashes the hardware fault orange LED at me and I'm in australia with a US monitor...this will cost me big time to send it back for repairs/replacement.

I need to rule out FS2 at this stage.

3.2ghz Pent 4
22" NEC monitor
XP Pro
2 gig ram
Radeon 9800 pro

Tell me if you need anymore specs.  Any replies would be appreciated...

Dude, what? A game is not about to blow up your monitor. Besides which, FS2 uses 640 and 1024 resolutions. Nice system, BTW, hope you get it fixed as FS2 will look sweet. Don't forget to pick up the FS2_Open exe, to get all the fancy effects.

Oh, and this --> is the condensed form of the 'shotguns and flamethrowers' welcome.

Yes, I know a game couldn't (unless it ran at lower than 640x480, it's the rated lowest res on the NEC 22").  But, this wasn't in the game.  FS2 runs a config program when you first install.  Unfortunately, it did not detect the card when it first popped up (odd, but I thought this card didn't exist then so no worries), so I ran "detect available video cards".  Monitor goes black, about 5 seconds later I get this white sparkle in the centre then the orange LED and blackness.  Comp is fine I'm on it now, running with a 15" LCD (blerg).

Turn it off, on again same LED flashing which is a hardware fault.  Some "secondary load short circuit" whatever that is.  What worries me is the fact that it happened during this old detect sequence, which could have used some 320x240 old crapbox res and caused the monitor to pop a fuse somewhere.

I think it has nothing to do with it (personally I think the monitor just kicked it) but I thought I would ask if anyone knew anything about the detection process FS2 uses.

Thank you.

I doubt FS2's launcher would have caused problems. The game itself only runs in the two modes DG mentioned so I doubt the launcher would check for anything else.

Most likely the monitor decided to crap out just as the detection was running.

Yeah, most likely.  Looks like I'm shipping it back to the US at my expense to repair/replace.  /joy.

Oh and NEC Australia doesn't have this model so it would void warranty if they opened it up :sigh:

Just because it does not explicity state that a monitor supports a given resoloution doesn't mean that it doesn't support it.

This only applies of course to smaller resoloutions(400x300, 320x240, ect).  It just accepted that these will work, their just left out because 640x480 is the current minimum standard and most people will never see them.
So as through a glass, and darkly

Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

I think your tube's knackered, mate. Damn...:blah:

Are you sure Alienware support and warranty stuff doesn't cover you? That's bloody disgusting if they don't - I thought they had a reputation for good customer service and support.  Good luck, though - that's a lot of money to spend to have your new kit blow up on you... :)
