How old is the 'welcome beam' and whose idea was it?

not sure exactly, but it's been around a while.  WMCOOLMON's been using it for ages

When the HLPBB was upgraded to vB, Steak invited everyone to make new smilies; I submitted the welcome beam for a smilie. Eventually it was removed as a smilie, but it had already caught on.

I made it around 2/26/02, apparently. At least that's what the date on my webspace says

Edit: Yep, I found the original PSD file and it's marked as 2/15/02

Not really. That was for a modding tutorials/info site which I started on, made the basic layout and such, but eventually lost interest in. It wasn't a very public project so a new avatar was never made.
