9 years from the Estonia Disaster
Another day to remembered. Probably everyone who lives in Europe (in the Scandinavia, Baltics and Germany in particular) must know about this disaster, often called the European Titanic.

Today, 9 years ago the MS Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea, due to reasons still debated. Of the 989 passengers and crew onboard, only 127 were rescued. Those 861 who died on that ship include the captain Avo Piht, the estonian singer Urmas Alender and others.

Well, they know that it sunk because the visor fell off, but no-one has really given a universally recognised answer to why the visor fell off.

I'm not gonna laugh but I just can't help but seeing Geordi fall of a boat with his visor...

Any way, my sympathy goes out to the families of those who died and the survivors.

to drew: A visor is the front end of a ROR-type ship, that is raised and lowered in the docks so the cars inside could get off.

you know, if the papers weren't feeding me up about the stabbing of Anna Lindh, I'd probably would have known about it before now. a lot of swedes died in that disaster, so yeah, I guess I can pay some rememberance. cuz I only care about swedish citizens, you know. except the ones I don't like.

The brits heard a lot about this cause we had a similar disaster.
I seem to remember that at the time the British press mentioned that it was the Swedes who had blocked more stringent safety standards that the EU wanted to bring in after the earlier Zeebrugger ferry disaster.

I remember that myself. Forget the name of the ship though.

The British ship was called "The Herald of Free Enterprise" It wasn't as bad a disaster as the Estonia but a lot of people thought initially that there were similarities between the two.

Ah yes, I was trying to remember the name of the Herald. Nasty buisness. Bin across the Channel on car ferries nuff times, and there's always a nagging feeling that the boat is going to roll over with the next wave

Well they have stopped setting off with the doors open now so it should be harder for it to happen again.

Did this happend 9 years ago? I've almost forgotten about Estonia. Goddamn, time really flies by. This was a huge tradegy in Sweden since around 500 of the ones who died was swedes. Several of my dad's coworker and a friends grandma died. Needless to say this sucked bigtime. :(
