Well, I was toying around with some new shockwave effects and now I'm stuck with a problem.

The shockwaves are way too big.

I think the problem is, that the picture size (in this case 512²) affects the actual size of the shockwave in-game.

Look at this tiny vasudan cruiser.

In the picture above it's ok... but that's only the beginning of the animation :(

I think it's twice as large, as [v]s shockwave (256²)

Is there any table to edit the size ?

the image size has no bairing on the size in game, this is a basic facet of how UV texturemappig works, it doesn't, it doesn't doesn't doesn't doesn't!
you probly just have it expand too quickly or not quickly enough, or something to that effect

Have you tried adding a heavier (ish) 'fade'  effect to the end?  might help / look neat.  For my part, I think it looks ****-hot

Yeah, but then I'm wasting space. (i.e. if I only use 480² of a 512² animation.)

BTW I have some upload problems... so I can't releas this.
Ah, the perseus map is ready... same problem.
Perhaps I'll put it up on geocities, but not today.

Edit: I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to release this, cause it was created with 3d Studio Max Trial. Although it shouldn't be a problem since it's not comercial.

@Bob Will 32-bit ANIs be implemented ?

Yeah, i suppose.   What I mean, though, is if you convey the effect of it losing 'power' over that long range - i.e. it's still a big shockwave, but it's evident the power is decreasing with the range / time.  So only the very last frame need be black, the rest is just really faded.

Er.... I've never had any issues releasing mods created with *cough* semi-legitamate *cough* copies of Max v4 & photoshop.

I think it is legal for the next 29 days ;)

(30 day Trial)

And you are right, I think you should get these programs for free, or cheaper if you don't want to release commercial stuff.

But I don't like doing illegal stuff... *afraid*

But that's how V did it, isn't it? Like the warpmap isn't the largest space of the texture that it could be, either...

So it's up. It gave me an error message, but it seems to be fine.

J3Vr6, you planning on having a Dry Martini to celebrate then? ;)

Nice looking shockwaves! Though Aldo & Raa are right, it needs to fade out near the end, else the shockwave will just come to an abrupt stop at the edge of the image size, which I think would look odd, wasted pixels or no.

Oh, and I had a Dry Martini once, it was wet :blah:

Wrong topic, DaBrain!!

The main problem is the palette. It doesn't look all that good with the banding going on.

Maybe you should 'equalize' the colours in it a bit - this'd look (technically) worse of course, but wouldnt cause ugly banding like that.

It's pretty nice, but too much colour variation to fit in FS2's 8-bit ANI system :doubt:

Good work nonetheless.

I did so.
The lensflare had blue rays before ;)
(And also notice, every single frame has a  different diffuse value :) )

I thought the higher fps rate would make the lack of colors harder to see ;) Well, it doesn't...

The more I equalize the colors, the more comic-ish it looks.

I think [v] could have easily created this effect.
But they didn't... perhaps due to the color limitation.

Anyway we need 32-bit ANIs. This would cut the time I need for animations down.

I'll work on this again, but its a time-killer.

Edit: BTW I love Godzilla ;) My favourite trash movie.

With shockwaves, the FPS depend on 'shockwave speed' so it doesn't matter at all which value you put as FPS.

Nice shockwave, it really does add the "Oomph" factor into bomb hits and exploding capital ship much better than the old one. Fix the size and it'll be great.

Unfortunately, that same shockwave is used for the anti-fighter cluster bomb and it does suit the launch profile of that weapon. It would be nice if we could use another shockwave ani for that weapon...
