Well, when it comes to just hard disks, a hammer or just some good old urine will do just fine. Thermite's expensive.

I just use strong magnets. If anyone holds a floppy disk in front of me with vital data on it, I feel this incredible urge to pull out a magnet and start getting rid of the said vital data.
