Yep, I'm completely new here and would like to put FL ahd HW2 on hold for a while and find my way into FS2. How do I get started? Just point me in the right direction and I can figure it out from there.

I've DL'd the Underdog FS2 version (and of course all the music and sound files are wacked) and am wondering how to move into the Open 3.5.5 version. Little confused here since the 3.5.5 zip I DL's is only 2.4 MB.

How can I get a complete install of FS2 or do I need to find a copy on eBay and patch/upgrade/mod it with all the good stuff found here on HLP?

Where's my starting point?

Check the thread a few above this labelled "Sticky: FreeSpace 2 FTP Server". That ought to have all the files you need on it for a complete FS installation.
As for the open FS2, all it does is provides an alternate .exe etc., and a few different effects. It isn't a full install of FS2, since it doesn't need to be - it still uses all the default models, textures, sounds, etc.

I suppose your best starting point would be to get the Descent Manager tools from the Downloads section here. That will allow you to extract the data files from the main VP files and play with them. That will certainly be your first step into a much brighter world
