DMA and Windows 2000 woes
Hopefully there's someone here who's had this problem...

I recently bought a new hard drive and installed Windows 2000 on it. The Seagate hard drive is definitely capable of Ultra ATA/100 mode, and I would like to use it in that mode. My motherboard, an Abit VP6 is also capable. I followed the instructions on Tweak3d.net to get things working...but the drive stubbornly remains in PIO mode.

Now, I also have a utility included with the Seagate CD that will supposedly enable Ultra ATA/100 mode...but I'm not sure if that's even necessary or safe to try.

There is another hard drive, an IC35L080AVVA07-0, on the same channel as the Seagate (Primary) operating as a master drive. Both are set to Cable Select. It should be Ultra ATA/100 capable as well (But I am not 100% sure). On the other channel, a combo DVD/CD player runs happily in Ultra DMA mode as the Secondary Master.

Any clues as to why Windows 2000 is discriminating against my hard drives?

1) Install latest chipset drivers for your mobo.
2) Go to device manager and uninstall primary, secondary and third controller (whatever it's name is in your system) and reboot.
3) Windows detects the controllers again, installs drivers. Reboot.
4) Now it should be in DMA mode.
