Easily solved. If UA don't agree we just boycott them until they do :)

Hmm that might work. But lets see how the nerd riots of 2004 get along when ROTK wont win best movie at the Oscars...

If it doesn't win I'm going start ignoring Oscar night and paying attention to the Golden Globes or Bafta's instead.

The Oscars only mean something cause people feel that they are a reflection of what movies Hollywood thought were good that year. If the Oscar panel ignore LotR again then it means that their opinion isn't worth listening to. So next year just don't watch :)

I'm going to cling to the opinion that LotR was slighted because they knew that if they gave anything to FotR then there was a good chance that they'd end up giving the same awards to TTT and RotK if they turned out to be better. So instead they held back and decided to give everything to RotK.

If that isn't the reason then the Oscars are irrelavent to me as they aren'tin any way a true depiction of which movies were well acted/directed.

ACtually, the golden globes come before the Oscars. So basically the ones that win the golden globes have a higher chances of winning the Oscars. Its basically the foreunning awards.

And I agree with you Karajorma. My personal theory is that they didnt want to give a basically foreign movie all the oscars. That would demean hollywood, the very voters. It would be like saying, yeah, a little Island on the other side of the world can make better movies than us when they have the chance. So ofcourse they have to vote for the more "patriotic" option. And sometimes movies are made ONLY for the oscars. Look at chicago or Cold Mountain. Both forgetable movies, only made and released before the actual oscar event. Cheap in my oppinion. Meh...

I wasn't saying it was patriotism that motivated them since IIRC New Line is an american company (although patriotism is a possibility).

What I was basically saying is that once they'd given Fellowship any major oscar they would have tied themselves in to giving the same Oscar to TTT and RotK and they didn't want to do that because it would mean that there was no debate about who would get that particular Oscar.

e.g suppose they gave Peter Jackson best director for Fellowship. Was his directing any worse in RotK? Nope. So they would have had to give him that one too. By waiting for the last movie they felt they could still give the cast their props but avoid locking themselves in to giving Sir Ian Mckellan best actor three years running.

Anyway this is just a possibility. It's equally possible that the Oscar committee are a bunch of short-sighted morons who wouldn't know a good film if it bit them on the arse.

So what? If it's the best movie, it's the best. You don't say " Ah well, it's the best but the sequel will be the best too, and the second sequel, same deal, so let's give our crappy golden dude to another movie coz it would be unfair to the lesser movies, and that way tLotR won't get the title of most decorated movies ever".

I fully agree but we're talking about the same people who thought that nothing by Spielberg except Sheindler's List was every worthy of an Oscar so I'm not expecting a large amount of rational thought from them.

um, we're talking about hollywood here. why exactly is anyone expecting any rational thought at all?

im not saying individually they're stupid. it's when they get in committees that the iq goes down.

There HAS to be some truth in it :)

That aside, I don't give any credits to the oscars, so I couldn't care less if RotK gets some or not, in fact.
Hope we'll get some emi awards gollum speach tho, makes cool DVD bonus material :p
