i think it would be cool, that when you scan something you get like a laser beam sweep of the object. the beam would be emmited from the sensors subsystem. it would look coolest if you had faned out lasers sweep over the object. you could have to of them, one sweeping horizontally, ther other verticly, kinda like the lines that cross the sensor display. it could be done graphicly by animating the scan rays in an ani file.  the engine would strech it (like the way beam cannons do) from the subsystem to the object being scaned. if someone wants to impliment it id be willing to do the animations in photoshop.

Personally, I'd rather not see this, primarily because ther most interesting and fun scanning missions occur in a captured or rebuilt hostile fighter. Shoot a big red laser over the ship your scanning, and I'm pretty sure it, or the other ships around it, would notice what you were doing. Plus the sensors subsystem is not always conveniently located in the front of a fighter, though I'll admit IIRC that is the general location for most.

I'm all for eye candy, but I'd rather see something like a pulsing glow around the object being scanned, something that is obviously projected on the pilot's HUD.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

if you want this a couple of times for a special kind of scanner you could do this with a beam turret and a little SEXP'ng, i think.

still, read my siggy.

Yes, ditto. I'm just imagining your first undercover mission with Snipes, when you're (supposedly covertly) scanning the Iceni... "oh, hey guys. How ya 'goin? I was just... y'know, scanning the command vessel, seein' what was goin' on..."

That would rock.
SCREW CANON!

Sounds like a good idea, as long as it's not too distracting.  And maybe there could be a version of this for locking missles?
For great justice.
