I need help with conversion!!
I hope someone can help me, i'm still a little nood when comes to FS2 modding, and I have a weird problem with the conversion programs: until now i've used the plain old Cob2fs2 dos tool to convert my models, and all worked pretty well, it gave me no problems at all...
Unfortunately this tool can't convert high poly models, and also doens't have all the smooth options the newer tools have, so i tryed using PCS to convert my models; problem is, when i tell PCS to open the COB file to convert it start to work, then it seem like it goes into a loop, and i have to terminate the process. So i tryed using Modelview, and guess what? Same problem, the conversion put the program into a loop and hangs it.... so i also tryed the latest version of Cob2pof, and this one doesn't hang up, but it just crashes to desktop at some point in the conversion, without any error!!

Of course I immediatly tought there was something wrong with my models, so i tryed converting a Orion and an Hecate to .COB, and then reconverting them using the same tools.... same results, PCS and Modelview go into a loop and Cob2pof crashes!!

What I am doing wrong???? Why only Cob2fs2 works for me?? :(

Cob2Pof should work, but try Kazan's Pof COnstructor suit to convert. It's slow and *****y as hell, but it works :)

If it won't work for V ships then there is probably something wrong with your install of PCS.  PCS will screw up any [v] ship exported and then imported in that way cause the hierarchy they use is different but it should convert them whithout hanging.

Double check that you're not just being too impatient though :)

Mmm, you mean it can take looong time to do the conversion? Even if cob2fs2 takes only a couple seconds? I'll try that, but i think i waited up to 10 minutes a few times, is it normal that it takes longer than that?

Nah. That's almost certainly a sign that something is wrong then.

Don't think it too strange that modelview won't convert a [V] model though. I just tried it and it didn't work for me either.

Sigh... i tryed all version of PCS out there, the last thing i can do is to try it on the PC at work... maybe it's my computer that have something that screw the thing up....

I ran into this problem several times. This might be no
great help, but I only have those sort of problems with older
PCS-Versions and models with geometrical errors. (I found out
myself too, that the dos-converter sometimes mangaged to do the
cob-file anyway, however I didn't get thruster running when
using the dos-converter). With the dos-converter you have virtually
no chance creating a better model with turrets, debris and LOD, so
better forget it.

The newer PCS-Versions normally gaved me an error-message :
"Stack overflow protections was engaged..." or something.
I really hated that sentence with the time.

However, I never really understood what this message should
tell me. Most of the models I had this problems were bad extractions
from other games which doubled faces etc, never had those
problems with self-created models though.

Try the following :

Go to the SCP-forum, there must be a special PCS-version for
High-Poly-Ships

Delete all subobjects and Lod's, maybe the failure is in one of
the subobjects. Try piece for piece, which one contains the error.

Make the model bigger (really, this worked for me two or three
times). You can set the PCS-scaling factor down then. Seems like
this stack-overflow thing is a problem where too many Polygons are
to near to each other.

Might be nothing, but still worth a try.

Good luck

mmm, actually i HAVE done models with turrets, debris and all with the old dos tool...never bothered with the trusters thing, i don't like the feature.
Anyway, in fact i use only models converted from somewere else, cause i'm no modeler, so maybe that's the problem, but i'm not experiencing this problem only with high-poly models, all of my models make pcs crash, and as i told, even the V ships...

Anyway i'll try this too, thanks for the suggestions to all, guys

Well, i think the stack-overflow thing is a check for bad geometry, amongst other things.

I think the compiler uses recursive calls (self-calling methods), so each method call doesn't know how many times it's been run (so to speak)...i.e. it can't (easily) detect when it's in an infinite loop (or excessive loop) , so I guess Kaz put in a check for memory usage to stop this.

Sounds logical. I think the message says something about
an stack overflow protection when the compiler reached
a depth of 1000 recursions.

But It must be that error. As I said, I had this problem with PCS simply
freezing for myself. First the later versions brought up that error.

If it is no secret for some mod, you could send me the model and I
take a look at it, maybe I can give you a hint. However I'm quite busy
with my mod-work, but I think I could spare a few minutes.

If you wish, send it to

Once i a while I can't use a model cause to make it proper size it causes the message (stak overflow, 1000 recursions ect..) but to make a fighter cruiser size (though it works) is silly.. Could there a be a fix in the future for this? I mean what's the difference no matter what scale it is the model is the same polygon dimensions are maintained... Weither it is full sized or a 1/72nd representation. Shouldn't this sorely be a memory issue? I have 512ddr memory btw..  Or is this truly a bad geometry issue?
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !

I need help with conversion!!
Thanks to your help i was able to convert most of my models using PCS for smoothing, but still there are some i can't convert, i tryed everything, but the only tool that works is Cob2fs2...

It is possible to make smoothed modes with that old tool too? The only things i get are faceted models...and they look crap, especially with FSO....

Help!!

edit: i made a search and i have indeed found that Cob2fs2 convert smoothed models if they are smoothed in Truespace before the conversion, is that right?
