I was just watching Nasa TV live webcast - they found definitive (my word) evidence that there was once water where Opportunity is - the region was drenched (their word)


For starters they found iron sulfate hydrate (jerasite) - hydrates are chemical compounds which include water in the crystaline lattice -- jerasite cannot form in the absence of water

I didn't know it was really still debated that there was water on Mars at some point. It's been hypothesized for a long time that Mars used to be a good deal warmer, and it does have those icecaps...

those icecaps are mostly co2 ice

Despite the fact that there are water erosion formed features on Mars, some current theories focused on the idea that melting of water ice in the soil caused the erosion as opposed to actual rivers and oceans.

This is proof that Mars, indeed had a lot of water, just like some new models of early Venus show that it also had oceans.
