So, what you're saying is, that you'd rather make a good sequel to a crappy game, than a good sequel to a great game?
Actually, no. As much as I hate to say it--and believe me, I really do hate to say it--Freelancer turned out to be a better story and--God, this hurts--better GAME than Freespace.
The thing is, I never thought Freespace had that great a story. It was a fun game, don't get me wrong, but it was horribly, endlessly cliched. Freelancer, for all that it was horribly racially stereotyped (and had some cliche elements) did manage to be, over all, more for and actually had more than just two characters (Freespace had Snipes and Bosch and no one else at all memorable).
My only beef with Freelancer is its game play engine, honestly. By the end of the game, I was pretty much hooked on the story and pretty damned ready for more. That's a good story: it made me forget I hated playing the game long enought to enjoy it. Freespace, on the other hand, had an okay engine and a lame story that was grossly mishandled (we finished the story with the destruction of the colossus... and we've still got half a game left! what will we do?!).
Let's put it this way: the 'Lancer Universe, the Wing Commander Universe and the Iwar universe all have a lasting presence in my head. On the other hand, if it weren't for Steak and Venom and Aldo and Narol and a few other people, I'd have forgotten I'd ever played Freespace.
So yeah. I'd like a great sequel to an okay game instead of a great sequel to a game that was not, in my opinion, as good.
