Image Editing Help
Yo yo yo, what up d00ds. And so forth. I'd like some advice concerning Photoshop and related wizardry  - I've got this Shivan tile:

And I'd like to make it in to a sort of pale gold/silver metallic colour vaguely like this:

I've managed to make it yellow alright, but I can't make the colour paler without drowning out all the techy detail somehow. Which is bad. I have available to me PS, PSP, Irfan and, yes, Paint (ph34r). Advise away :)

um... the GIMP is you friend?
but I guess having Photoshop negates this

To make my point more clearly - I'm not looking for someone to say 'use Photoshop' or something. That much I get. I'm after precise, idiot-proof instructions, or at least vague clues, for someone with no experience in this field

so, gold or silver? can't be both. regarding the pic, all I can see is a field of white, with a grey line.

if the detail gets drowned out, just up the contrast (Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast in PS), though you may want to toy with it a bit depending on the results.

If you could find a picture of something that is coloured in the desired colour, that would help a lot.

I'm trying to think of a metal that's the right sort of colour. The idea is that it's an alien metal, so it doesn't look like your usual steel/aluminium/whatever. Mostly silver, but with a yellow tint, I reckon. The sample I posted was hardly white.

I'd post a picture of what I'm aiming at... but I don't want to give the game away. I'm incapable of carrying out thinkgs I say I'm going to do. I need to do it first, then announce it :)

something kinda like...this?

Result of:
* Increasing brightness to where it washed out the grey
* Messing with color balance to make it yellow-ish.

Well, I think I've got the colour worked out. Sort of. Anyway, a more pressing question - I need to recolour the Moloch tile that has the glowy bit on it. What's the best method of recolouring the metal bits whilst keeping the glowy bit the same colour? Basic cut'n pasting produces some ugly results...

Assuming Photoshop even halfway deserves its marketshare (go Corel PhotoPaint!), you should be able to use the Mask tool to select the only the sections you want to change the colour of, and then use the colour balance tools to change just that part.

why not just add an adjustment layer for Hue/Saturation? then you can just raise the brightness, desaturate, and colorize all in one fell swoop with lots of room for tweaking... then add a contrast adjustment layer to bring the detail back in :P

for keeping the original color and contrast of individual parts, you can easily add a mask to the adjustment layers and paint the mask to reveal the original parts

hue/saturation, variation, gradient map, colour balance are your friends, and maybe levels....they all are in the same menu group. I'd try first the gradient map or hue/saturation. Variations is more user friendly, but less powerful.
Another strategy could be that one:
make a gold layer (just fill a layer with the choosen colour)
put it at a lower level than the shivan tile
select the shivan tile and change its blending to darken (or a similar one)
change brightness/contrast of the shivan tile till you obtain the desired result.
There are other ways... for example using channels... as usual in photoshop there are 10 or more ways to do the same things:)
edit= I was just referring to your first prob:p

for the second one you can cut the glows and put em in another layer, or select everything but the glows and then change the colour, or use quick masks ("q") or use layer masks or work with the channels or work with the levels...

Alright, so I've gotten the hang of ****ing with the colour **** till I get something roughly like what I want. But the brighter maps are drawing attention to the God-awful tiling on the Moloch. Any volunteers to redo the bits mapped with CorvSTile2A? There's hobnobs in it for you...

[EDIT] Actualy **** it, I don't give that much of a ****, I'll just use darker maps. No biggie
