Oldie Newbie Questions...
I'm an old hand with FS2, even used to post on the VolitionWatch forums, but thankfully, Derek Smart reminded me to play FS2 again! :)

What you guys have done with FS2 is amazing!

I have a couple questions, though:

1) In the install, there was an option for hi-res explosions and whatnot that was labeled something to the effect of "extreme slowdown".  Is there any more info on this?  Is it a matter of a DX9 video card or high CPU?

2) One vs. Both guns?  When I only have one gun selected, it fires a whole heck of alot faster than when I select both, but I've never seen anything about this anywhere.  Is it worth it just using one gun?  Is it actually twice as fast?

3) There's a button for "More voices", but the site it takes me to doesn't seem to have any more voices.  Is there another link?  (I can't wait to try Derelict with voices)

4) If Freespace source code was released to the public domain, that allows for derivative works.  Wouldn't "Freespace 3" be considered such a derivative work, and Derek Smart can kiss our collective asses?

I know #2...

Yes, there is a difference... I generally use both guns, both the same, since I'm not a spray-and-pray type person... It fires at 75% (IIRC) speed when you have 2 selected... therefore, yo do more damage per hit, at the cost of shots/second...

I believe that Lightspeed made an error (maybe of judgement) when he made the explosions which means that unless you have a high end video card you're going to get slowdowns. However apparently this has been fixed.

You loss 30% of reload rate when you link two guns together. Up to you to decide if you think that's worth it :D

If I remember correctly you want the SAPI 5 installation. It's been a while so best wait and see if I'm correct. :)

Not quite. Although the code is now freeware the trademarks and copyrights on the ships and images in the game still belong to Interplay.

1) The high res explosions in their original form were very large and high detailed, but caused a large frame-rate drop in the game. I'd recommend not installing them unless you have a very good system, I'm sure there was a version of improved exposions that reduced slowdown somewhere on the forum, but a search fails to reveal them I'm afraid :(

Edit : And that was a quick demo of how much faster some people are at typing than me ;)

Could you be a touch more specific on what you mean by a "very good system"? Would a 2.6GHz P4 with a 128MB Radeon 9700 Pro suffice?

I would say that was a very good system, yes :)

The Radeon should be able to handle just about anything the SCP throws at it, but I think it's a matter of how the code processess animations that is causing the problems. It's less on higher spec CPU's but can still be a problem :(

Is anyone else still having problems with explosions, even with Lightys newest set?
