Try removing mv_textures, especially if you have the new version. Lightspeed's textures chew up memory like nothing else, especially the animated ones.

Yupyup there's a big no-no with Freespace2 open and memory consumption.

There's no way it'd consume 1400+ MB of memory just like that.

And the nebula is definitely still too bright.  It's been modified so it's better but somehow it's still oversaturated.
