Marlor writes "Australia's main opposition party have just confirmed that they will be supporting the Free Trade Agreement with the USA. This means that Australia will be adopting DMCA-style laws and Software Patents in the name of 'harmonizing IP laws with the USA', despite consistent lobbying against them. Matters are made worse by the fact that, unlike Americans, Australians are not protected by 'fair use' provisions." Odd that 'harmonizing' is always in one direction - for some reason, no one ever wants to decrease IP regulation to harmonize with some other country.

Ya'll are getting your very own DMCA....

How can the opposition party make laws? Isn't that the point of being the opposition, not having any real power?

This is the Liberals right?? with that guy...whats his face. Apparently, he called Howard an arse-licker.

Not much of a market here for that, and plus I think the big P(Privacy) will always be around, unless they want a nation-wide revolt.

Labour is the opposition, but since the Howard government already supports the FTA, then essentially this means that it ceases to be an election issue, and whatever happens when we do go to the polls, this is inevitable.

Frankly, I kinda saw it coming. Even if Latham did oppose it, I expect Howard will push it through before the election anyway. I'm personally opposed, especially to this aspect of it, but the government seems to have stopped listening to the people. Ah well - Labour's still the better choice - they'll theoretically prevent any further bull**** from Howards higher education "reforms" ie. raping normal Aussie students in favour of internationals or local rich buggers who can afford to pay full and massively increased fees, pull most of the troops out of Iraq, and generally run the country better. Slightly anyway.

We've had way too much bipartisan support these past few months - the opposition are scared. I think Latham's beginning to have doubts about the high road he started on, representing something really different from the present establishment. Now, he's hardly distinguishable from the liberals.

Yeah - he's also making a lot of grandiose promises, and then backing or watering down later on. Troops home by christmas and Labour's recent support for the GST the two most noticable ones. That said, at least they're not completely supporting the FTA - Labour're blocking it until the government agrees to ix the double standard towards generic pharmaceuticals. Some good news.
