i just got to install FreeSpace2 again.. started looking at SCP etc, and found there are ALLOT of diffrent addons and effects.. most unfinished some partly finished..

i was wondering what is the best combo for FS2+SCP for both performance and graphics..
so if anyone can help me get the best out of FS2, what addons should i be installing, and where can i get them ?
also what settings should i be using the launcher, which is better D3D or OpenGL ?

It will help if we know how powerful your computer is. The SCP stretches computers about as hard as much as some modern games do.

In the meantime. Install FS2. Patch it to v1.2. Download the launcher, one of the builds from the Latest Builds forum (I use the latest one from taylor personally) and you might as well grab all the media.vp files from

can you give me a link to the SCP build your using? btw i downloaded and installed using the SCP 3.6 installer and it included media.vp, is the one you posted diffrent ?

my spec's are as follow's :
Windows 2000
Pentium III 1ghz
nVidia GeForce3 card
640MB SDRAM memory

runs most games flawlessly altho a pretty old system, but FS2 is much older isnt it

The media.vp files included with 3.6 are quite old now. The ones I liked to are the most up to date versions and have fixed a few bugs.

I use  this  build because the new IBX code/VP stops the game taking 1 minute or longer to load missions with the Fenris in them (Not a bug so much as FS2_Open taking a long time to deal with the Hi-poly Fenris).

As for what setting to use my computer is quite a bit more powerful than that one so I can't really say what would cause slowdowns.

The high poly models will probably be the worst offender there so don't run with that VP at first (ALL the media.vps are optional  so you can swap them about to see what runs best).

UPDATE... Have played till the trinity mission, when you 're about to enter the hyper-gate and head into shivan space. No SLOWDOWNS, missions load in second, IT IS THE WORKS. I am shocked and amazed at the versality of the thing... My settings on the launcher...(there is another file with the exe the .ibx thing. It is amazing. The zip/rar file contains a .vp file Make sure it is installed in the root folder ---where the other .vp's reside. It can speed up the loading of the game by 300%).
