FreeSpace2 Ship Models in non-POF format?
Hey everybody!

As you might know, I'm working on a mod/campaign called FreeSpace: The Chaos Gate. I'm currently working on the cinematics for said campaign, and I've encountered a problem.

You see, I need the FreeSpace 2 ships in a usable format for animating. However, using POF Constructor Suite didn't work...trying to convert between POF and COB didn't do anything.

So I was wondering, can anyone convert the files for me into a "normal" format (COB, OBJ, LWO, C4D, 3DS, MAX), or point me to a site where I can download them? I couldn't find them on the FTP server, so....

Thanks.

That's odd, PCS usually does the trick perfectly for me.  You did have a model loaded when you tried that option, right?

It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

check descent-freespace.com for POF2COB... Choose the input, output, and then select the LODs and debris you wants, and convert to cob... from there, use 3Dx to convert to everything else...

When converting from .cob to .pof, you do it directly. But to convert from .pof to .cob you need to load the model first, and only then try to convert. As pointed out by Stratcomm.

EDIT: Damn... too late.
No Freespace 3 ?!? Oh, bugger...

Yeah, I did load the model first.

When I tried to export it created a tiny (30k or so) COB file that was just empty.

I'll try downloading POF2COB, though. Thanks.

I think i know what´s wrong. When you convert .pof to .cob, the scale is off. You probably couldn´t see the model because it was too small, but it was there. Try with a cap ship, to see if it works, and check your scale rate in PCS.

Okay, well, POF2COB does work. So does PCS, it turns out. I dunno what I did wrong (I tried it with a capship both times...I just extracted it from the VP file differently...maybe that was it).

But now I have one other question. I've gotten the model all converted, but the textures don't convert with it. So, does anyone know how to get the textures extracted and set up? When I try to load it in TrueSpace it gives me all these "Texture Not Found" messages, so I think all I need is the images, and it'll apply them correctly by itself.

So, does anyone know how to pull the textures out?

Thanks again everybody!

I think you can extract everything from the sparky vp maps section into one of the Truespace directories (or for whatever program you're intending to use), anywhere under Textures I think.  They should show up automatically.  Oh, you'll need to convert them to some other format for Truespace/Max to read them.

Truespace 3.2 seems to like .bmp, though it doesn't seem to display them whenever I open a model.

Ah! I got it working. Took a little fiddling, and I ended having to bypass TrueSpace entirely (Doesn't like the texture map or something...), but I got the model converted and textured.

Thanks everybody!

Truespace doesn´t read .PCX.  Convert to .BMP or .TGA, using your favourite graphics program. I like Paint Shp Pro 8 myself.
