I just watched Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata, Winter Light and Saraband in a row, and by god, I'm astonished by level of genius in this filmmaker. As is common in great literature and great filmmaking (and Bergman has got it in both), the story is simple, almost banal, but  the level of emotion it evokes, and how it still manages to be so psychological, yet not pretentious.... simply wonderful.

And terribly, terribly, terribly sad. Probably the most depressing films I've ever seen. Wouldn't exchange those moments for anything though.

yeah, he's great. among my favourites of his works is 7th seal, the virgin spring, fanny and alexander and wild strawberries.
