From the horse's mouth
sorry for another political thread, but this seemed significant.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's plan to withdraw from some occupied territory aims to rule out a Palestinian state indefinitely, with full U.S. approval, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites)'s chief of staff said on Wednesday.
...

"The significance of our (unilateral) disengagement plan is the freezing of the peace process. It supplies the formaldehyde necessary so there is no political process with Palestinians," Weisglass said in an interview published in the Haaretz daily.

"When you freeze the process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state ... Effectively, this whole package called a Palestinian state, with all it entails, has been removed indefinitely from our agenda," Weisglass said.

Same story, possibly different spin upon it

A top Israeli official has claimed that Ariel Sharon's Gaza withdrawal plan was deliberately formulated to block peace negotiations with Yasser Arafat.

Now what did I say the other day about peace negotiations out there?

Despite anything you turkey's can possibly say to the contrary, Arafat is a mangy bastard terrorist.  He alone is the reason why there is no peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinians.
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

Yeah, I really want to hear nothing more about this subject.  My college is hosting (for some completely unknown reason) a Palestinian Solderity Movement (Student arm of the ISM) conference here next week.  I'm going to see about a thousand times more protesters in the next week than I'd hoped to have to see in my life, and they're disrupting my studies to do it.

free speech > all

Lib: what does this have to do with Arafat? Just because he is the leader does not invalidate the whole cause. The article states quite plainly how Sharon & Co have purposely, with the consent of the Bush administration, rejected even the goal of attaining peace. They are not interested in a solution to the conflict. Does that not trouble you?

And FYI, despite all the corruption and such, which I (and many Palestinians agree is a legitimate grievance against him) Arafat's actions in the past are probably one of the only reasons why the Palestinians have not been crushed underfoot a long time ago.

It's not a free speech issue, I've got no problems with the conference itself.  It's just that this is a conservative university, with a very large and strong jewish population.  Why does it have to be here?

so you're saying that conservatives have problems with people who are promoting their inclusion in democratic processes

Well, to put it bluntly, they are here.  Ok, so not entirely correct, they're trying to lable the PSM as an organization that supports terrorism.  My point is that there are relatively few supporters of the cause compared to those opposed to it on this campus, so it just doesn't make sense to me to have it here.  And I'm pissed because they're making me move my car so that they can park in my $200 space.

I'm guessing precisely for that reason. Whats the point of preaching to the choir? The ISM are good people in my book, and anyone who wants to protest, whether I agree with them or not, is more than welcome to do so.

They're using our facilities, but as of yet I haven't seen any advertisement for community forums.  They are meeting here, not engaging the university community, and that's why I don't understand why it's here.

If you'de like to go the meeting or whatever, I'm sure no one will turn you away.

I really don't know anything about this since, well, I don't live there, so I can't speak about anything specific. Be sure to wear some Zionist tshirts though, check Sandwich's thread from about a week ago
