I have an MS Sidewinder Precision Pro and the twist (default "roll" in game) isn't always recognised. Reinstaling sometimes helps, and it looks okay in the Launcher and in the calibration screens (and other games). So any ideas what's up ?

Have you actually assigned the twist axis in game? Press F2, go to the ship configuration options (IIRC) and check that the axis has actually been bound properly if you haven't.
