Generally, retexturing ships doesn't look that good, unless it's a fanmade ship, and it's textures suck.

The brown textures, no.  That stretched lights texture on the Orion, eeyywww! The grey panneled one... change it around so there is a little more variance in the pattern and in the shading, and find a way to get rid of or recolor those original brown bits on the interior of the forward fins and on the neck, perhaps add some different colored lights (blue perhaps) and it might have mod potential.  Of course, this from a guy who doesn't texture-mod much (me).

I just thought the textures looked good on the err C914's destroyer and that superdestroyer in inferno, it is my first go at a real MOD (as in not just editting tables)

To be honest, i think you're doomed to failure if you're just doing a texture replace nowadays; the V ships (especially FS2 ones) often aren't mapped particularly well as-is, and replacing without re-UV-ing can be very dodgy.
