Texture Mapping - 3DS.
Hey everyone!  Would anyone know or have any capital ship style textures I could use?  I am new to making models and I have this model http://talimoor.game-host.org/newyork/cap_ship_NewYork_class24.jpg I would like to start adding textures to.  I've done a nice broad google search and was totally disapointed by all my findings.  I'm willing to donate this model to whom ever once it is done.  Thanks a bunch!

There are some very nice ones here under Resources, all you have to do is register.

Sorry to sound noobish but...  how do I take .pcx, .png, .jpg files and use them in 3DS?  3DS seems to only want .MAT, .MAX, .CHR files.  Maybe I'm doing this the wrong way?

In the Material Editor, under maps, click the box on the right. From the list that pops up, select "Bitmap" locate file box comes up, point it at the file.

You are doing it wrong...

Press M to open the material editter.
Click on one of the empty sample spheres, and then move to the bottom rollout.

Click the + on the Maps bar, and then press the button next to Diffuse, a new window will pop up. Select Bitmap, and select the map type.

Max, however, does not read PCX files. So it's best to use the DDS maps from lighty, or to save your own in jpg/targa.

Yes, Photoshop can read PCX.

Wrong place, but anyway...

The "New York" has improved, but it's still missing something IMO, it needs lateral definition somehow.

I'm taking the rest of the night off guys.  Going to play some WoW.  Been working on this texture issue since 4PM GMT-5.  I'll do some more with it tomorrow.  Again, thanks much everyone.

For some reason, my version of PS refuses to read .bmps :wtf:

Not a problem with IrfanView tho.

Speaking of Max, which tool should I be looking at to unwrap a mesh ? Is it the Unwrap UVW modifier ?

I'm not a 3DS expert, but the UVW Map is what I use to apply a skin accurately.  Don't know if this has anything to do with what your talking about though.

Err... Dunno about PS not liking BMPs... probably needs to be reinstalled.

I need to scour 3ds Max and see if there's a way to export a UV template, rather than making a screenshot like I do it now.

Yes, there is. Max has a built in generator and you can save the template. Problem is, it doesn't usually find a good clean way to map the ship.

In the tut I'm following, the dude uses Print Screen to generate the actual template, once he's done unwrapping.

There's an exporter available for v4, I know that (I use that!).
