There were other factions. A small but intense group was incensed that anyone would consider 10:30 p.m. "too late." It's really early, they said.

Damnit Thorn, there's two crappy puns in the first two sentences. It must be a pretty major deal over at journalist school, there seems to be an almost obsessive compulsion to use puns at every concievable opportunity.

Another reason I hate the judicial branch.
Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.

The judge awarded only $1 for damages, even though he could have given the plaintiff lost wages and the cost of new motion- sensor lights for her porch and more. She had itemized about $3,000 in all.

She wanted the girls to pay for her new sensor lights! Now I'm really annoyed! It's bad enough if that she had a panic attack over someone delivering cookies and wanted to be paid back for her medical bills but this $3000 bill sounds entirely too much like an attempt to fleece the girls.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.

Meanwhile, the Otis Spunkmeyer cookie-making company is offering to hold an event in Durango to set things right.

"Cookies are the ultimate comfort food," spokeswoman Liz Rayo said. "We don't want anyone sued over cookies. Cookies are good. This is an emotional issue for us."

I don't think its a big problem with the court in this one, but rather, a bigger problem with the woman :p ...

rest assured that the said woman will be hated for the rest of her life in the community.  probably a lot worse things than someone dropping cookies on her porch will be done to her in the future

One church group wrote that members were very concerned because one of its favorite programs is for youths to ring doorbells, drop off treats and run. Another church group in South Carolina said it had young men in its congregation who would like to correspond with the Durango bakers.

You guys do know that all of the TV judges preside over small claims court, right?  It isn't exactly america's last bastion of legal know-how.  Besides, small claims court judges are elected, if you're going to blame somebody for this, blame the voters not the judicial system.
