FRED is being an ass (2 problems)
Problem #1: The latest version of FRED2_Open is not even starting, I am getting this error:
Warning: Unable to find WEAPON_LIST_TYPE string "Terran Huge Turret (Old)"
in ship: GTD Orion#2 (Bastion)'s default primary banks.

Problem #2: With the Open editors that do start, the main viewing area a black.  This is directly connected to OpenGL, weather it works or not.  It seems that OpenGL decides to not work every time I shut down the computer properly.  To keep opengl working without reinstalling drivers, I have to f*ck up my fragmentation and shut it down by putting it in standby and pulling the cord.  Now my hdisk is 42% fragmented.  A week ago it was 12% fragmented.

I am desperate here, and I will give $50 to anyone who can fix both of them in one post.

Make sure that there is nothing in the primary banks of your ship.  If its a cap-ship, it should have none.

The orion#2(bastion) comes with fs2...  Remember the "bastion go boom and kill node" mission?  No beam turrets, mainly the turrets are yellow shots.  Different from a normal Orion, which has 15 huge turrets that shoot green things, 3 "slash" beams, 3 anti fighters, 2 big green beams, and 3 terran turrets that shoot yellow things.  It seems not to be able to know that the Bastion uses the pre-scp turrets.

Well then, its possible that your "Terran Huge Turret (Old)" is the problem.  Is this a Mod of some kind?  Is the "(Old)" actually included in the ships turret loadout name, and in the name of the weapon in the weapons table?

Mabey the Freespace to Freespace 2 mod, but it is completely uninstalled... down to the last file.

Here's the thing... when you wrote in the original message "Terran Huge Turret (Old)", did it actually say "(Old)" in the error message, or did you add that in in your message?  If there is no weapon in the weapons table file called "Terran Huge Turret (Old)", but one such listed in the turret loadout of the Orion entry in question, then all you'd have to do is rename the loadout entry to just "Terran Huge Turret" and that should solve the problem... if my guess is right.

i did not write that in.  I never modified freespace 2 scp in any way in my history of it being installed.

I HAVE GOT A SOLUTION!  You know how service pack 2 likes to "attempt" to be smart?  Well, it is really f*cking up my driver files, and killing opengl for freespace 2.  It seems to do that every time I shut down with "importand security updates".  I forgot that you can elect not to have those updates, so I am fine now.

If someone can help me get the newer Fred2open version up for me, I will in turn not destroy the world.

If the game told you that then you have not removed the port as well as you thought.  The stock tables make no mention of any weapon with "Old" in its name, so if you're getting that error message something else is overriding the stock tables.  Make sure your data/tables directory is empty, and check your main directory for any .vp files other than:
root_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp

If there are any other files with that extension in the main FS2 directory other than those listed, delete it.  If that still doesn't fix it, download VP view and extract the tables from root_fs2.vp and place them in the data/tables directory.

woo it loads.  Now the view is screwed up.  At least it actually displays something... though there are no models, instead a waypoint indicator.

Did you select the option to display ship models?  Select the "View" menu then select "Show Ship Models".  There are other settings there you may want to use.
