OK, here's the thing: Running FRED_Open sucks away all my cpu cycles. Looking in task manager, it fluctuates between 90 and 99%, which leaves nothing for any other programs. On it's own, fine, that's not a problem, but when trying to run VLCplayer, Gmax and Firefox at the same time, it slows everything to a crawl. And I've got a pretty fast computer:

Athlon 64 3500+
1Gb DDR ram
160Gb SATA HDD
Radeon X800 Pro

Also, when it's open my computer makes a funny little high-pitched noise. It's really odd - and it varies in pitch when I do things (like pan the view, or minimize/maximise the window, or open a menu or an editor). It's very odd. I don't know what's making it exactly, but it sounds like it might be the hard drive.

I'm thinking it might be something to do with the graphics, ie. the rendering of the viewport itself. Any ideas?

Have you tried the command line -fredhtl?

Yeah. It screws up all the ship placements something wicked, and the noise is still there...

Why do you need GMax and FRED open at the same time?

Cos I was doing stuff with 'em. :p They're just examples, though. Substitute any program you care to name. Also, it makes FS2 slow down considerably as well...
