Open-Source / Free CD Ripping software
I'm looking for a program that will rip CD audio tracks into WAV format, is free (open-source would be ideal), fast (Winamp's 2x speed doesn't cut it), and allows one to specify the output format (i.e. I'll be ripping spoken word, so I want to make mono WAV files).

I don't need MP3 conversion (MusicMatch Jukebox does that just fine), just CD-to-WAV.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Funny you should ask this, I was thinking about starting a thread about MPC format. For many of the songs I've tried it on, it's basically CD quality at an average of 160 kbps. I'm not sure if Musicmatch supports it; however, the Winamp plugin can be found on this page: http://www.musepack.net/index.php?pg=win

dbPowerAmp will do WAV and MP3 right out of the box; it's a general conversion program that also comes with a CD ripper program. I've had to set my CD to the built-in CD player IO for it to work with Audio CDs with data tracks, but other than that, flawless conversion with a straightforward interface.

It also expands files' tooltips to display IDv3 info, sample rate, etc from explorer - although you can choose not to install it.

It's been a while since last release, those who want to rip into OGG might want to update the outdated built-in OGG plugin.

CDex, look for it on the web, great tool. Does CD-to-any-codec, including WAV, OGG, MP3, AAC, and a ****load more. Also does CDDB checking, and will write ID3 tags (v1 or v2, your choice.)

Thanks for the help, guys. CDex is what I decided to use (though it's MP3 encoding preferences are a bit annoying to change).

Yes. But it converts from CD audio to all the other formats it supports, too. :D

There's also a player and CD writer and something else, I think, which presumeably use the same codec database.

I've never upgraded to the latest Media Player, since everything I've heard tells me that it's a spyware-infested bloated piece of proprietary crap. I think Sandwich posted a link to Mediaplayer classic, too. I still use the version that just plays movies; it's all I need to do with it (Although kaffeine does it better :sigh: ).

This is SOOOO true....give me Winamp anytime...or VLC for my movies.

I'm using FreeRip - works great, exports into MP3, WAV and OGG and is completely free - you only have to pay to remove the splash screen;7
