That's the storage space we have, not space that we've actually used. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I'd much rather have them increase the allowed attachment size than the storage space.  What use is two gigs of space when you can only send 10 MB files?

Just out of interest what would you have increased it to?

I'd like to see it increased to 100-200 MB...so I can send large archives to friends instead of burning it on a CD....

do you honestly think that gmail will reserve an exact amount of 2 GB for each user?  There's gotta be some sort of pool system....

Yep

Hmm 200x10MB emails , I just don't see it happening. Maybe if they increased the attachment size there would be more use for a Gmail account.

I've received large files over gmail. Just divide them up into small rars.
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

You guys are missing the point of GMail. It's to store your emails for life - emails which can then be searched effortlessly. It's not to store unindexable multiple-span ZIP files just so you can have another way to pirate the latest movie off your friend - heck, if you're that desperate, install an FTP server on your friend's machine, make a "p1r473sRk001" user, and start downloading from your computer. That way you get resumability, and your friend doesn't have to manually upload things. Sheesh.

True, but I send most of my emails to the trash after they've been read once. If I was a company it'd be different.

I prefer renting or buying DVDs btw, much better quaility and its 5.1 sound, I'm also on a 56k line.

I was thinking that if there is a larger attachment size for emails, there could be a mailing list for builds/mediavp/etc. I would elaborate more on this idea... :blah:

Uh, no. Unless there's someone with an upstream cap of over 100k/s, it'd be a pain in the ass to send. (It took me well over an hour to upload 3.6.6)

A mailing list that got updates from the SCP news would work, but you don't need a phat attachment size for that. And most e-mail providers can stomach a single EXE, as long as it's compressed.
