Avatars can be fine. They're useful for rapidly identifying posters. However, the overwhelming population of idiots on the internet feel compelled to select garish, oversized, animated abominations as their avatars.
Image sigs are flat-out inexcusable though. Those who use them seem earnestly convinced that everybody wants to see the exact same (usually stupid) image over and over and over every time they post. And it's always a LARGE image. Usually larger than the body of their post.
The type of posters who lust after image sigs, when denied them, tend to compensate by creating oversized, garish TEXT sigs. Scroll to the top of this thread for a prime example.
