When John Kerry shows up on the scene and shows up on the scene and announces that he's against Bush, people vote for him, and then he says something along the lines of "Oh yeah, and I won three Purple Hearts in 'Nam".
The 'Nam hero part makes little difference in the long run; Kerry only got a lot of attention from either side simply because he was against Bush; the whole Democrat 2004 election was primarily an "anybody-but-Bush" race, and I'm sure a lot of Dems would have preferred Dean or someone else running instead of Kerry/Edwards.
