Old laptop not detecting USB flash drive
I've got this really old laptop that I ultimately want to hook up to an entertainment system and play emulated SNES games with, but for now I just want to get the emulator installed and working. The emulator, along with some other stuff I want to install, curretnly resides on my Creative Nomad Muvo Flash drive/MP3 player. The laptop is running Windows 98 and has the Muvo drivers installed but the muvo doesn't show up when I plug it in. The USB port is working because when I plug the Muvo in its LED turns on. The only thing I can imagine being wrong is that USB port is able to send power but not information, can this even happen? Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried it with other USB devices?

You could be right about the power and information channels.

You can always try another port....
windows 98 SE or FE?

win 98 SE. I've tried plugging in a USB mouse, the light came on but I couldn't move the cursor with it. I thought it might be because this version if Windows was too old to handle plug and play mice but it probably means the port can't transfer information. The laptop is so old that only has one USB port. I could burn this stuff to a cd to get it on the laptop but then there would be no way to get files off of it (snes savegames for example).

Try patching windows a couple of dozen times.

I'd uninstall the USB port from device manager and let windows redetect it/reinstall it.

patching windows isn't very feasible since getting the internet to work on this thing would be a major pain.

Try getting the updates onto a CD or something? Windows 98 got a LOT of patches for the USB stuff.

w00t! I managed to get this old beast networkable and I'm downloading all kinds of updates and crap for it. This pretty much eliminates the need for USB stuff so even if the port is broken it's okay. Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

:arr: Yarr! I'm posting this from the laptop itself. I'm amazed that it can handle the internet at all.

I haven't seen one of those in about 5 years.........
