JAD's never completed 7th mission had Derek Smart in the Colossus being towed away by an Elysium transport into subspace. It took FOREVER for it to actually go into subspace. I think the vortex actually closed before the whole thing actually left.

To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow. - Metrodorus of Chios
I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

I can't remember if retail ever did that but the icculus.org version does so it must be a problem with the original code.  Can't tell you how many times I've gotten insanely pissed because I got killed from a collision with the station when it starts swinging around wildly to get into position to warp out.  It's EVIL!!
