My brother is an xbox fan and will probably get a 360 the day it comes out.

I personally have never been impressed by consoles though. Crappy FPS games, no mod capabilities, few customization options and monthly charges for playing online = bad. FPS games on a console suck because of the gamepads, and even if a mouse/KB combination is supported, I'm not sure how you would use that comfortably in a living room setting. At least these next generation consoles look like they will address the poor graphics issues.

Also, if I want to actually buy a game, I always go to ebay. After the first two weeks or so from the release date, the prices are considerably less than what you would get at stores, even with the shipping.

Dude. Save for an LCD. I'll point you to a sweet LCD deal that's every bit as good as a Viewsonic, but half the price.

The only LCDs that can really match a good AG CRT in contrast ratio and color accuracy are professional grade models that cost over $3000. Although they are convenient if you need to travel with them a lot.

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

This is a pickle of a situation........

Keep it or trade it in. I recommend keeping it so that if you can split play time better between competing parties.

Money is **** for trade-ins, at least in my neck of the woods.  It's better to sell it 2nd hand via a paper ad or similar; there's usually someone looking out for a cheap xmas present.  (hell, I even flogged off an acorn electron that way)

For the Viewsonic you mentioned? That seems very high for a 19" CRT...isn't that around $450 USD?

yeah, unfortunately high end CRTs have all been out of production for a while and are increasingly difficult to find. And the best ones, those based on the SuperBright Diamondtron tube, had horrendous quality control in their last few months of production, so the few that are still available have such a high defect rate that you are better off getting a used one. I got this one about two months ago, which was arguably the absolute best monitor of any type out there under $3000, but went through three replacements before I got a properly working one, and even then only because the fourth one happened to be manufactured over a year ago and was still new. At least their RMA system is very good.

By the way, back on topic, even with all the fancy hardware specifications on the 360, does anyone else think that 512MB of shared memory is quite low compared to everything else? That sounds like it might lead to fewer or blurrier textures in games. The textures in the latest computer games are quite underwhelming compared to some things a few years ago, but they are still much better than the ones in console games.

Depends on bus bandwidth and cache sizes as well, IIRC.

GT, PGR, Forza Motorsport, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell (multiplayer mode), Rainbow Six 3, Halo, Ninja Gaiden, and KOTOR to name a few.

Add Jade Empire and Crimson Skies to that, two excellent games.
