Help out the New Guy
Hi I just downloaded Freespace 2 thanks to MatthewPapa .

Two things.

Firstly, I want my little throttle slider thing on my joystick to work as the aceleration/deceleration like it did for X-wing Alliance. It just does nothing and I dont know how to bind it.

Secondly, I just want to go out and start blasting stuff. Can I play one of those multliplayer missions against enemy AI? I tried playing one but there wasnt any.

Can't you just start the campaign for the second thing?  Just make a pilot on single, press continue, then press C on the next screen, select 'Freespace 2', click contnue, then press R.

There's a way to bind the throttle to the acceleration...but buggered if I can remember how :o

It's in the control config, though.  And it's been asked here before, so search for that.

Damned if that's not the most useless answer I've ever posted, though........

Oh yep, I can play the normal campaign alright. I was just wondering if you could play 'skirmish' games. Like just you and a whole lot of enemy AI, like you can in X-wing alliance.

To bind it to your throttle: go to the control panel, locate the turn/bank/throttle axis settings. Click on throttle and move the throttle slider. That'll do it for you :)

And no, you can't play a skirmish game like that in FS2 (one of the things that has always bothered me as well, actually), but you can make the multiplayer onslaught missions (forget what they're called, but there's one for each race) singleplayer, and play those. They're pretty much the same :)

Hehe alright thanks. I did search and couldn't find anything, but maybe I suck at searching. So its like a config file you open? Thanks hopefully I can sort that out.

*edit* Grrr I replyed too late again. I'll go try that, thanks. *edit*

*edit* Oh god never mind I found it, im just blind. Thanks guys. *edit*

Unkown Target: You mean the Control Config in the game? I couldn't find any kind of turn/bank/throttle axis settings. Im using the FS2 Open version.

If you mean the control panel in windows - what the? Hehe when I move the throttle the red bar goes up and down like it should.

You bind it in the game not from the windows control panel.

Kind of surprised I haven't added this one to the FAQ yet. I'll type it up properly so that I can cut and paste it later.

How do I get my joystick's throttle to work.
  • Press F2 to bring up the options menu
  • Click on Control Config
  • Select Ship
  • Select either absolute or relative throttle axis
  • Click Bind
  • Move your throttle

Absolute throttle and relative throttle work in slightly different ways so you should experiment and see which one you prefer. (I can't atually remember the difference between the two modes at the moment).

Someone should link the old missions sites for the new people. I remember there were XWA type guantlet missions made long ago...

DL one of those and drop it in your missions folder. Long as it's standard it should run fine just go to your techroom and click on single missions.

Regarding the difference between absolute and relative throttle axes:  I believe (but don't hold me liable on this :p) that the absolute throttle setting is used for a device with a fixed range of motion, such as a joystick or HOTAS throttle.  The relative throttle setting is used for a device that doesn't have any set lower or upper limits, such as a mouse wheel.

:welcome:

I see no one did that yet

I'm pretty certain that's correct. Except I'm never able to get the relative throttle thing to detect my mouse wheel. :(

I think you could be correct there. I'll give it a test next time I play :)
