What is it with all these odd patents showing up in the news lately?

Think that's bad. Some guy just tried to patent the script of his movie.

He wanted to patent the plotline for the movie. Something to do with some guy missing the last 30 years or something. No idea why copywrite shouldn't cover this to be honest.
