Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
Hi all, these are my specs:
*athlon xp 3200
*x800 pro
*1 GB
I am running the SCP's official build 3.6.7 (23 september), all media VP including patch 1 and 2 over a clean FS2 (Iso disk) installation patched to 1.2 and version 5.3 of the launcher.
Command line options are as follows:
(fs2_open_367.exe -spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -d3d_no_vsync -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -ballistic_gauge -3dwarp -env -alpha_env -fps  -FOV 0.39 -AMBIENT_FACTOR 75)

My concerns are 3, found in the first mission of the main FS2 campaign:

1 - Massive FPS drain during the explosion of the belisarius (Therefore i presume all capital ships)
2 - Thruster glows and afterburner trails (I only see thruster glows on vasudan ships and afterburner trails only my ship)
3 - All nebulas in the background seem to have a planet on them wich makes it look a bit repetitive.

My questions are:

1 - Are the new 3d shockwaves ok? Should i download an updated version? Is it that i haven´t selected the correct command line options?
2 - I´ve seen a thread about problems with thruster glows so I asume there is a known issue and I should wait, am I mistaken?
3 - I love the new starfield but the backgrounds keep giving me this repetitive planet on one of the nebulas. Does anyone like that effect in all the background? Should it be there?

As usual, thanks all for your help.
I feel like an exile......

Re: Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
First, you're having a memory problem in some form or fashion.  Please remove the -pcx32 switch from your command line and see if that helps at all.  That switch is somewhat depreciated; it's not obsolete but it causes so many problems that it's no longer a launcher option in newer builds.

Secondly, the version of the 3d shockwave that made it in to mv_adveffects.vp is way too high-end for most normal systems (yes, including yours, as I have one strikingly similar that suffers from the same problem).  It takes forever to page in, relatively speaking, and IIRC it doesn't really get loaded until it's used in mission.  As I don't think there's another source for a shockwave in "Surrender, Bellesarius!", the game won't stall until it tries to load that in.  If you can find it with search broken, I suggest downloading a medium quality version of that effect and placing the image and eff files within it in data/maps.

As for 2, I believe afterburner trails have been removed from media VP tables for some time.  You shouldn't be seeing them at all.  Unless of course you mean you don't see the thruster graphics change when a ship engages afterburners, which is strange and probably indicitive of a real problem.  A lot of that has changed significantly in recent builds and thruster graphics still aren't fully up to snuff, so there's not even a good way to test if it's changed lately.

Lastly, you'll have to provide a screenshot of #3.  I think I know what you're talking about, but I'd like to see it before I start barking up the wrong tree.

Re: Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
Trails got accidentally removed.

adveffects should only be used if you want the best possible graphics and you have really good hardware. Aside from the animated glowmaps, once the shockwaves/beams are fixed, you probably won't notice much difference aside from the animated glow maps, or staring at a screenshot.

Try turning off the mipmapping. I got quite a large speed boost from doing that.

The Myrmidon player ship seems to be the only ship with those trails.

Re: Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
Hi all again, after testing........

First of all just state that taking -pcx32 and mipmapping has indeed a positive effect on framerates. But not a very generous one, so for that mild difference i will keep with mipmapping on. (Tears come to  my eyes when I remember that once mine was a high end system)

Explosions still look ok if I use the original FS2 ones for the time being....but do you know where can I find a medium quality explosion update for the one in SCP? Is there a softer version of the explosion out of the advanceeffects VP?

As for the afterburner trails the only one having them is the players myrmidon as Dark Revenantx said.
Thrusters I'll just wait and keep on trying CVS builds to see how they come out in the end.

The backgrounds show like this, with a planet showing on one of the nebulas....making it look IMO a bit strange.....I just wanted to know if it's supposed to look like that:

Cheers.

Re: Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
I don't think that's supposed to be a planet. It's some kind of nebula bubble. ;)

Well, three of them on one screen look indeed weird...

Re: Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
I have, every time I play the skybox "enhanced" main campaign.  I'm still waiting for someone to go through and replace :v:'s nebula groupings with more fitting ones from Lightspeed's packs.

Re: Capital ship explosions and backgrounds
That nebula is all arround the background and also, in some points, it's stretched in such a way it doesn't look like even a nebula bubble.

All in all there's about 10 or 11 throughout the background...I just caught those three together to make the nasty effect.
