New Noob, new problems
Hello, I downloaded the Freespace Open 3.6.7 & the SDK pack from ShivanSpS torrent. My System is:

AMD64 3400+
GA-K8N Pro Motherboard
XFX nVIDIA 6800GT
1024MB RAM
Windows XP Professional SP1

After I installed all the mods, I tried running the game and it gives me this error:

The instruction at "0x77f580c9" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
then
The instruction at "0x77f58d2c" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".
And it self terminates

So I tried all possible settings combinations and it still gives the same error (using launcher or directly on the file)

I tried using Windows 95 compatibility mode & run the FS2_open file directly, and it launches the game, all goes well until I exits the game, at which point I'm faced with a black screen & the game's cursor that can't be moved. I see my windows cursor flicking, but since I can't see anything, I'm only able to do restart the computer. When I tried playing the game's story mode, all goes well in the 1st mission until that friendly ship that's supposed to relieve you warped in, but instead of a warping in ship, I got a lock up. I got the flicking cursor again, so I suspect it game crashed and it being unable to exit properly it "stayed" frozen on my screen.

The settings I use for the game is:

C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_r-20060125.exe -mod mediavps -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -cache_bitmaps -missile_lighting -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash  -ambient_factor 75 -cell

So my question is:
1. Will I be able to run the game without compatibility mode?
2. Is there a way for me to be able to exit the game properly? I even tried forcing it to shut down through Windows Task Manager, unsuccessfully.

Thanks for any solutions!

Re: New Noob, new problems
First thing I recommend doing is going to the launcher>>features>>Dev Tool and ticking run in window. At least that way you don't have to worry about resetting the computer if it keeps going wrong. You can run fullscreen once you've stopped getting lockups.

Have you tried a more recent build? 25/01/06 is quite a while ago. The bugs you're experiencing could easily have been fixed since then. Go to the recent builds forum and grab the most recent build from the CVS builds thread.

Re: New Noob, new problems
Me being noob (and knows totally nothing about modding) complicates this further. As I downloaded a "premodded" pack, I'm at a lost at what files I need.

Meaning: I need someone to hold my hand through this. The many files really short-circuit my brain here. If someone is willing to tell me what files to get (I assume I will need to overwrite the old ones) it would be deeply appreciated. I got that ShivanSpS torrent so yeah, that might be useful as a starting point. I'll try to answer questions about it as much as I can.

Oh, there's one lockup point that's persistent and has occured 3 times. It's on mission 3 where you're supposed to chase the fleeing enemy flagship at the start (it got away). You then have to fight multiple waves of capital ships & fighters. In one of the waves, there's 2 cruisers that need bombers to kill. I cleaned the fighter escorts, and take my wingmans away from the action, letting the bombers do their work. The 1st cruiser goes down ok, but on the second one, when its hull goes to around 40%-50% the game locks up. I tried with all enhancements off too. So maybe that's extra info that's useful (or not)

Re: New Noob, new problems
Very well. What you want is this file. Save it, extract it to your main Freespace2 folder. Run the launcher and click the browse button at the top. Look for FS2_Open_r_20060323.exe (or something like that. It's the numbers and the _r that are important). Run that and see if it works.

If it doesn't run the _d version instead and post any errors it gives you here.

Re: New Noob, new problems
I tried the file that you give me, still unable to run without Win95 compatibility mode, lockup still happens after that enemy capital ship explodes (Actually, the explosion itself might be the trigger of the lockup, as it happens at the exact time where the ship should explode).

I got the same exact errors. With the d version, I do see that the inability to start the game in WinXP mode was failure to run OpenAL. Reinstalling it or getting the newest version of Open AL doesn't solve anything. In Win95 compatibility mode I got this message:

Warning: Couldn't open paticle texture 'Yellow_glow'

I hope that's the error message you want.

Re: New Noob, new problems
Hmmm. I doubt that problem is the cause of your woes. Go to the mod tab of the launcher and click no mod. Run the _d version again and see what happens. (Marvel at how ugly FS2_Open looks in comparison without the media VPs while you're at it) :)

I tried no mod mode, this message comes up when I tried to go into ready room (running the d version).

Running the r version gives me this message when I tried to enter the ready room

I need to point out that there's no such thing as a "fs2_open" directory in my comp. This is so confusing...

Re: New Noob, new problems
The missing FS2_Open folder isn't a problem. As it say in the error message that simply means that on the computer that built the executable there was a folder with that name. Basically it's to tell us programmers where the problem is rather than you :)

Unfortunately we still haven't hit the cause of the problem with either error. My bad but I forgot that you were using ShivanSPS's torrent and that it will cause exactly those errors when you turn off media VPs due to the way it was built. (ShivanSPS is aware of this and will hopefully avoid the problem when he updates his torrent). Sorry but I'm going to have to ask you to rerun after a couple more quick changes.

1) Rename your Data folder to Data-old or something.
2) Create a new folder called Data.
3) Copy the contents of Data-Old\Players to your new Data folder.

Now re-run and tell me what happens. You should now be absolutely free of media VP components now so any crashes you get are due to FS2_Open itself.

Re: New Noob, new problems
Well whaddaya know, it still crashes in Windows XP mode, but Windows 95 mode runs flawlessly without all the lockups. Thanks a lot man!! I'll miss the much better details, but I'll take the ability to play the game over better graphics every single time!! Hopefully in the future there's a graphic release that allows me to play it, but I'm happy at the moment!

Re: New Noob, new problems
Two things... Rename the data to data_old, and create a new one, as karajorma say, them Remember to select the MeviaVPS as a mod, remove any compotibility mode as you seted, Select OpenGL 1024x768 in the Video Settings,  them try to run which the R CVS, remember to run from the launcher... Is should not cause problems in this way, if they do it, edit your launcher6.ini... (remember to close the lancher if already open).
delete all that is say and put this.

Quote
[launcher]
exe_filepath = C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_r-P420060306.exe;
game_flags = -cell -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -missile_lighting -dualscanlines -targetinfo -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload ;
active_mod = mediavps;

them launch your launcher and select your R CVS... and try to run... Is should working now...

If run well, go back and copy the Models, Maps and Tables folders from data_old to /mediavps/data... this should install the Low end Shockwaves.

The problem is defenitly the Low End Shockwaves... the ships.tbl... anyway is needed or the low end shockwaves will not work...

Re: New Noob, new problems
To ShivanSpS

I tried your fix but, again it gives me the

The instruction at "0x77f580c9" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
The instruction at "0x77f58d2c" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

error and shut itself down everytime I run it without compatibility mode, whether it's from the launcher or direct from file.

Re: New Noob, new problems
not, that is not a problem which the launcher/file/pack, is obius your pc.... Try to do some antivirus scanning, and I very recomend a AD-watch scan there....

Also make sure that your antivirus is not bloking or suspecting of the launcher o .exe CVS in anyway.

Seach "0x77f580c9" and "0x77f58d2c" in google.

Re: New Noob, new problems
That's a null pointer error. Means that there is is something wrong with the code not eagleeye's set-up. (Or at the very least something wrong with both).

Re: New Noob, new problems
While I'm a noob on modding, I'm very good with PC setup/system/security and I assure you my set-up is ok & my PC is clean of spyware/virus etc.. Antivirus/Firewall didnt do detect anything. This is the 2nd game I got problems on this PC (The first being FF VIII, but then it also didn't work on my old PC 4 years ago, so meh...). At the time being I'll see how far I can go without mods =D
