Top of the line files?
As of Easter (2006 04 16) what are and where are all the files to get everything needed for FS_Open to run with all the options?

IE:  The latest VP files, SCP builds, Fred builds, launcher, ect...

Thanks!   :pimp:

Re: Top of the line files?
Oh yuck.....this is a hard question to answer......
Ok what I did was I got the latest version of FSOpen from a stickied topic in the SCP forum. Then got the 3.6.8 VP files from http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php in the downloads section. The MYZpack file (I think) has the files you need.

Keep in mind that a fairly modern computer will be needed to handle the updated graphics correctly, otherwise lag occurs.

If that doesn't work get the complete package from ShivanSPS's topic (it's a torrent).

FRED builds can be found in the same topic as the CVS builds.

Get Launcher version 5.3 from above link.

Follow karajorma's FAQ to the letter and everything should work right. In fact, I think this question might be answered better on said FAQ... check the website ring at the top for his FAQ.

Re: Top of the line files?
Yea, I think I got that stuff.  I'm running the 20060412 Build with the 3.6.8 Delta VP files and launcher 5.3.

It stalled mid game.

What I really need to do is up grade my PC to run everything better.

Any suggestions on what flags to turn on with a AMD 2500, 512 megs-o-ram and a 128 megs-o-ram FX5600?

For one thing, make sure you're running on OpenGL.

Re: Top of the line files?
Code: [Select]
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\20060412-fs2_open_r.exe -mod SCP_368D -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris
 -2d_poof -cache_bitmaps -missile_lighting -img2dds -no_vsync -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer
 -ballistic_gauge -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -env -alpha_env -decals -fps  -ambient_factor 75
 -fov 0.39

Up and running, but wow!  How about a -looks_good_flag instead of all the above?

Re: Top of the line files?
how about no :p

env and alpha_env don't work last I checked, and I dislike about half of those features personally.  Only about six or so would qualify for a "looks good" flag ;)

That said, there needs to be a way of generating recommended settings for better graphics.  It is daunting for someone new.

Doesn't the "-mod XXXX" part need to be the last command line argument, rather than at the beginning?

Re: Top of the line files?
Hmm.
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Command-Line_Reference
If I can remember right, my settings were something like this:
Drive:\path\fsexecutable.exe -spec -glow -jpgtga -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -dualscanlines
-targetinfo -orbradar -ballistic_gauge -rearm_timer -nobeampierce -smart_shields -ship_choice_3d
-3dwarp -warp_flash -UseNewAI -mod <mod1,mod2,mediavps>

For more info on the -mod switch (and to see whether you need it or not):
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_mods_for_fs2_open

Note the switches -nobeampierce, -smart_shields, and -UseNewAI alter the game balance, so you might want to drop them.

turn off decals, they look terrible and they're buggy, you'll get freeze ups due to them.

Re: Top of the line files?
Oops.  I forgot -fov :
From the wiki command line reference:
Quote
-fov
Specifies the Field of View for the player eyepoint.

Takes one argument decimal specifying the angle of the viewing cone in radians, from 0 to 2*pi

You can set the cone of view making things look bigger/smaller. The problem with this is that if you choose a small FOV, you will have a squashed look on the edges of your screen - stretched edges with a too high FOV. It is recommended to change the FOV as FS2 normally has some perspective distortion at the screen edges (FOV too high). Set the FOV to something like 0.39 - it will fix the distortion problem, and (as a nice side effect) will make everything look bigger and more realistic scale-wise. The default is 0.75, if you go higher, you'll get the fish-eye effect. Feel free to experiment. This must be entered into the "Custom flags" field
Note you have to specify this under the "Custom flags", meaning there's no checkbox for it.

SPAM for new feature (feel free to ignore): A drop-down box listing common / recommended / and default values for this option would be nice.  One of those combo boxes that list everything mentioned above, but you can still click into them and type a custom value.

Re: Top of the line files?
FOV is really a custom preference thing, you can change it, but even if it looks better, it may be frustrating to different people due to the enclosed viewpoint.

I personaly can't stand the 'correct' settings for it for very long, because I want to see more of the area.
