There's really a whole number of different sources for Transcend's story, but you'll have to just play it to fully understand it. I'd recommend playing Sync beforehand, and if you wish to continue this via PMs, I can give you a couple of other things to see to fully understand it.

Actually, the only other big one that I've stumbled across is the movie Event Horizon. The Event Horizon uses a gravity drive to go great distances in space, and goes missing for several years (much like the Sync device and the fact that the Persistence crew is registered as MIA for three whole years).

The Generation in Transcend seems to be similar to Sam Neil's character in the movie as well; Neil's brought back by the ship because "she won't let him leave" and the Generation is brought back by the Transcendant because "memories never die."

The mysterious transmission detected by Omicron in the nebula is also similar to the Event Horizon's distress call: both say help/save me through terrible distortion and loud howls/screams. Probably the most obvious reference is in the Transcendant's transmissions in the subspace mission, though: "Do you see?" and "No!" are Sam Neil's last words in the movie.

But, no, I haven't thought about it much.
