Trouble Installing FRED Open
Well, I'm a newb. Simple as that =P. I stumbled upon this space sim, and I fell in love with it. I finally finished the last mission and am sad that there won't be a 3rd. However, I have heard alot about this FRED editor, and the one in my Freespace 2 directory doesn't work (Gets errors, only ships I get are Terran Fighters, no weapons), I'm guessing because I have Freespace Open. So I download Freespace Open Editor, but I can't install it! It says I need OpenAl32.dll. Well, I downloaded that. But it still won't run, it says I need a -real- (Whatever that is) Windows image or something. I don't want to make fantastic plot twisting explosion action pack campgiens, I just want to mess around a bit. But it is seemingly becoming impossible. So can anyone tell me what program I need to install the 3.6.7 FRED Open editor? Thanks!

First...
:welcome:

then... What FreeSpace 2 install do you have? Disks? Old HotU stuff? Have you installed all the stuff (especially FS_Open related stuff like mediavps) according to the guidelines given in Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ? Then did you just DL the requested dll or did you install the OpenAL?

Download link

Infact you shouldnt need practically anything to install FRED.. just drop the downloaded executables to the root FS directory.
Do not meddle in the affairs of coders for they are soggy and hard to light

Re: Trouble Installing FRED Open
Well, if you can understand what I'm talking about I downloaded a "Bare Bones" Pack. It was about 700 MB, Freespace installation minus the cutscenes. After that I downloaded the Freespace open Launcher, all the media packets and such, and Freespace 2 itself works wonderfully. But for some reason FRED just won't work. I just downloaded the DLL, not the actually program. I'll try that now.

Edit: Alright, I installed that link and now everything works perfectly! I'm not quite sure why FRED would need an Audio program, but it's working now. Thanks for the help, and thanks for the nice welcome poster!

Edit2: Well, um, kinda perfectly. >_>. I used the quickstart thing in the FREDDOC folder, and it was all fine and dandy until I got to the save part. I saved it, and FREDDOC's said "FRED will know where the save is suppose to go, once you save it will be in your Single Player Fligth Simulation menu." Right-o, FRED saved the fiel in My Documents, I called it Duel just like it asked, then I opened up Freespace (I cannot open up Freespace via file menu, when I try it say "System cannot find file specified," so I just use the regular Open 367), go to the tech room, go to simulations, change from campgien to singleplayer... And there isn't a mission in there. Now I've read that quickstart at least 10 times, I can't find out what I did wrong, can one of you vets point it out, I'd really appreciate it!

Re: Trouble Installing FRED Open
The Bare Bones pack you have is almost certainly the 2nd HotU version. That weighed in at ~700MB too and also lacked the cutscenes.

The quickstart guide was designed for use with the retail version of FRED not FS2_Open. There are some things that have changed between when it was written in 1999 and present day. One of those is that FRED2_Open automatically defaults to My_Documents instead of Freespace2\Data\Missions. If you open up your My Documents folder and copy the Duel.fs2 file to that folder everything will work (hopefully).

Hmmmmm. Actually there is one issue which may come up so I'm going to do a pre-emptive strike here. What version of FRED2_Open are you using? There was never an official 3.6.7 version of FRED and the fact that you required OpenAl is proof that you're using a version newer that 3.6.7.

As a result the mission may not run in 3.6.7. (Most likely complaint will be you get an error message mentioning finding mirror instead of something it expected). If this does happen to you simply go to the recent builds forum (a sub-forum of the SCP one) and look for a more recent version of FS2_Open (3.6.9 RC 5 is a good choice).

EDIT : BTW when properly installed FRED2 retail should run perfectly well even with FS2_Open installed. The likely issue is that you've installed the media VPs in the main folder rather than in a seperate folder called mediavps. Check my FAQ for more details.

Re: Trouble Installing FRED Open
Thanks for the help, everything works wonderfully now! I actually think it is the offiial 3.6.7 build, though I don't remember where I downloaded it, I'm quite sure that's what it was described as. Plus it works fine with 3.6.7, so I don't mind anyways. Thanks for everyone who responded in here, now I can happily mess around and test out how many Orions a Juggernaut can blast open :D . Thanks again.

Re: Trouble Installing FRED Open
There is no Official 3.6.7 FRED build but I have frequently linked to a build from September 2005 and said that it's the closest thing you'll find to one and that it will probably save missions 3.6.7 Official can run.
