I was at this Lego fan convention last weekend and finally got around to organizing the few hundred pictures I took during the event. I uploaded some of the better ones here:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=202538

There was a lot of amazing stuff on display there. The highlights were probably the scale model skyscrapers (most of which were apparently built around 40 years ago and have been preserved since then), the battle droid exhibit and a thing called the Great Ball Contraption (a series of machines moving/passing/throwing/etc. miniature soccer balls around; the entire thing spanned several tables). They also had robot competitions, Lego movies, seminars and various other events going on. It was some serious fun. :)

I also met watsisname there during the public exhibition. Goober was present too, although we never recognized each other despite being in the same room at one point. :p

This is was happens when you add people with WAY too much time on their hands and an addictive toy like LEGO.....

That being said, I wish I could build stuff like that.

More than one point, actually. :) For example, in this picture, I'm just off-camera to the left.

Just out of curiosity, where was this at?

Ah, you were at that one too? I guess you must have seen that blue bot in the picture dominating all opposition. :D

Indeed, Brickfest was much fun.  I was quite amazed by what some of these people are capable of building.  :eek2:
Goober:  Damn, that's hilariously annoying.

I've heard of this.  I always wanted to go, but my family doesn't have the cash.  I would have liked to see the Great Ball Contraption.  Was it made with Lego's RCX or NXT robotics systems?  Or did they do it with just motors and battery packs?

Also, we seem to have quite a few people here who build things with Legos.  Maybe we should open an HLP Lego Build-Off thread?  We could have a division for FS models, non-FS models, and maybe a robotics division.  We would just need to set basic rules and find some judges.

This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address occurred during the same week.  This is an ironic juxtaposition of events--one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, while the other involves a groundhog.

You should have done what GalEmp did in Penn Station when he was trying to find Su-Tehp, Splinter, and myself - wander around the hallways with a placard that read "HLP" in his hand. I can't even begin to imagine how many people saw him holding that thing up and thought that he really did need "help" if that's how bad his spelling was. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

It happened to be very close to where I live, so I didn't need to pay for lodging and things like that. The GBC modules I remember seeing all used only motors and the speed regulator units, although there may have been a few running on RCXs. If I have time, I might make a GBC module for the next event.

I make mostly conventional Technic models and Space stuff based on the official themes in the early 90s. I'm currently working on some upgrades to that Annihilator model, mainly adding another motor to power the stabilizers on it.

That would have been funny to see. I had sent Goober my cellphone number in a PM, but I did it way too late. :p

The rotors on that thing were actually motorized. It was pretty cool to watch in action.
