Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
There's totally potential to redo the Trek image... I'd love to see ANY Trek series done in the gritty, realistic manner of BSG. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
I thought that's what DS9 was supposed to be. Or Enterprise (never watched it, so I wouldn't know). Personally, DS9 is my favourite, actually the only one I watched with any sort of consistancy, exactly because of the darker military-themed nature of the show, focusing on politics and society and war, not exploration.

Well, it's cheaper than making any sort of new series.

They may have tried to have gritty themes, but their production values were spit-n'-polish Trek SteadyCams.

What, you need shakey-cam to be gritty?

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
BSG spent their autofocus budget on Cylon effects. I guarantee if they had steady cam and normal focus, The shows originality would be half of what it is.

Can't deny it's pretty effective how they use it (documentary style).  Probably helps too, that it allows - IIRC - most of the sets to be full scale and enclosed.  (another thing strikes me - if you see the BSG sets vs how they are in reality ala behind the scenes photos, and how they are lit in the show, it's amazing how different  - and better - it looks)

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
while i agree BSG's quasi-doco camera style is cool, it wouldn't suit the..... well bugger it, it'd look fecking awsome with star trek.
what ST needs, is some serious nads, and grit, the ol' roddenbury utopian vision was all good and fine, back in the 60's. not now, it won't.
ST's universe seems a lot more colorful than what the writers, and the fans, give it credit for, there's a lot of potential for other stories, other aspects, etc.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to take any actor seriously whilst they are wearing a bright red jump-suit. That always annoyed me about the whole Star Trek thing, even when sending Security details to planets that were solid jungle, they'd still be dressed in bright red 'Ensign Expendable' clothing :(

don't forget they went on to the grey on black with a hint of area color later on.

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
Yep, they did what they could with the later series, it was like the whole talking point of 'Who cleans the Jeffries tubes?'. Members of the Engineering team could crawl anywhere on the ship using those tubes and never once came out with any smudges or dirt on their uniform.

It's funny in that sequence of pictures, you can almost see Patrick Stewarts cyncicism about the series fading as time progresses ;)

Re: Classic Trek to get a make over!?
In the first picure he actually has something that resembles an officers uniform. I have always considered that "line" of uniforms to be the most realistic. It resembles what they did with B5. No tight jump-suits, but loose inoform that looks comfortable and has *gasp* pockets! Pockets!

Althought ST officers don't really seem to need those. Why carry stuff around when you can be sure that next time you need that phasor or magic box of beeping, it will be on you in a belt. It is so ridiculous. If you see someone with a belt with stuff on it you can count on him/her to use it during that scene.

I watched an episode of Enterprise recently, from season 3, where Archer attacks a fairly weak alien ship to steal their warp coil. Certainly not utopian there.
