Fred Fun and Distractions
Here's the deal.

I've been teaching myself some fredding by attempting to recreate various ANI animations and cutscenes in Fred, and then setting them as a mission movie cutscene. I have a ways to go before I get anything close to completion, but my current project is the lucifer animation where it pulls up in front of a red nebula and disgorges about 100 scorpions. Would anyone else like to play with this idea and try to make a fred mission-movie of one of the freespace animations? 1,000,000 bonus points if you can get anything approaching the supernova cutscene.

Its mostly a lighting, camera angle, and scripting challenge.

Well, that's only one mission for one cutscene.  There's plenty of room for more projects like this. :)

I can't wait to see what you pull off with that Luci ANI.  To me, that little five-second clip captured what the reality of fighting Shivans would have "really" been better than just about the entirety of the two games. :)

You know what's really funny. I was thinking about doing this a few days back as a way of practicing with the cutscene SEXPs :)

Oh and while we're at it the hardest one to do isn't the supernova (creative use of a new shockwave could pull that one off). The hardest one to do is lab.mve. I'll be impressed if anyone can pull that one off in the FS2 engine :D

 :lol: Command ANIs of scenes like bfobar describes are SO viable that they're even on the CD already. :p

lab.mve you say?  I'd say hallfight.mve would be harder. :D  lab at least is in a single location / room...

Seriously though, this is awesome.  Missions like these, no matter how incomplete, will:
1. probably contain useful examples of cutscene SEXPs for other FREDers to learn from
2. be fun to watch / goof around in / modify, and
3. be excellent sources of screenshots, particularly for the splash screen(s).  Oooh!  and if someone felt like it, they could make a 'remastered' version of the retail campaigns with new custom 'loading bar' screens involving such shots.

The main advantage of in-game movies is that not only do they get upgraded as the rest of the graphics do, but they can also be moved around (downloaded, etc) for a fraction of the cost in hard drive or bandwidth space.

You could also do nifty things, like setting a mission in the middle of one of the movies - think BTTF2, where Marty is sneaking around his past self.

And hallfight.mve would be harder to do than lab.mve, due to the sheer amount of time required to do every single character animation. OTOH, the Ancients cutscenes, the Lucifer death cutscene, Bosch's cutscenes, and the FS2 intro cutscene would all be mostly possible with the game engine today.
