robotic voiceover.... bug?
since I've updated to the latest version of Open source..... in the campaign I'm getting really bad voice overs that sound way to much like they are automated in nature.

it started with the 1st nebulae mission involving the discovery of the Trinity but I've since heard the same voice during the debriefing from the mission.... the voice only comes in for brief comments "affirmative" "incoming hostiles" stupid crap like that.....and not the totality of the briefing which uses the default voices.

it's like listening to Hal from 2001 a Space odyssey and it really takes away from the game.

I hope these weren't deliberate voice overs and if they were I'll offer up my services as a voice actor because with no intent to offend these are absolutely terrible and unsuited for the game.

Open Launcher, get into Speech tab.

There are three boxes under title "Use Simulated speech in:"

Untick the boxes for techroom, briefings and in-game if you don't want them.

At least that's what I suspect you are experiencing.

I've seen this exact error reported before but I'll be damned if I can remember the solution. For some reason the voice synth is overriding the actual FS2 voice acting.

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
thanks for the mention of the Speech option the voice is Microsoft Sam and it's stupid.

I disabled the speech options but just in case I'm considering deleting MS Sam from the OS altogether.

has anyone tried this and is their any kind of adverse reaction?

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
Keep it - it's useful for user made campaigns that don't have voice overs (which was why it was implemented :)).

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
It is a bug...

On shorter commands, it takes longer to retrieve the file for the vanilla voice then it does to just simulate it. I noticed that too in Tango1, and it always happens in Tango2 and Tango3 (I don't have full vanilla voices yet).

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
disabled the feature it was terrible and worthless distracting from the game.

if a situation requires a voice over I'll make my own or get some friends together and well create as required.

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
It's not worthless by a long way if you're a FREDder. Having even computer generated voice acting will help you spot errors and timing problems that simply do not crop up if you don't have voice acting.

What you're getting is a bug. And it's a bug I know I've seen the resolution for before. I just can't remember what it was.

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
I can see your point in regards to troubleshooting but as a gameplay feature it was awful.

I disabled the feature and haven't had issue since, I'll keep an eye out if a fix is noted and thanks again in this thread as well as the other.

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
Actually if you have a computer powerful enough to run it and a copy of AT&T Natural Voices it sounds ace. Not as good as proper voice acting but tonnes better than silence when running a mod.

People who don't like it have generally never run it with anything other than the default MS voices.

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
Default MS voices are good enough for Techroom IMO. And if they're getting bothersome, the off switch is only a few clicks away...

But I think MS Sam talks too slow... :blah:

There is an option within your Control Panel to speed up the rate that Microsoft Sam (and any other voices you may have downloaded) speaks.   :D

Re: robotic voiceover.... bug?
Strangely enough, the other two voices speak much faster (i.e. acceptable rate, but probably too fast for Techroom use).

Like, er... the 'slowness' of Sam is good for Techroom, but bad in-game. If I start getting serious in FRED, then Mike and Mary would probably come in handy...
